Immigrant Ancestor of the Schleswig WI PAGELs |
Friedrich PAGEL was born 10 Jun 1818 in Franzen, Schlawe, Pomerania. Pomerania was at that time part of the nation of Prussia, but just 2 years later became part of the new unified nation of Germany. Friedrich married Henrietta Villbrand about 1840, probably in Franzen, Schlawe, Pommerania. While no earlier ancestry for either Friedrich or Henrietta is known at this time, it is hoped that a review of church records in the Franzen and Schlawe areas may contain information on earlier generations of the families.
The earliest currently known public record of him is found in Captain K. von Olerndoorp's passenger list for the steamship 'N.G.S.S. Main' out of Bremen, which arrived in New York 31 May 1869. The passenger list concisely enumerates the names and ages of Friedrich's family in 1869 (including Carl's young German bride Aloise/Alwine):

(Next oldest son Frederick A. PAGEL, age 25 when 'Main' arrived in 1869, had arrived a year earlier on 'Jenny' out of Bremen.)

This same family unit - one year older - is found in the 1970 U.S. Census for Schleswig Twp., Manitowoc Co., WI [transcribed as 'Hagel' by ancestry.com]. All family members are shown as born in Prussia except for the very recent addition of Bertha, Carl and Alwine's dau., who was born in Wisconsin after their arrival. For some reason, Augusta is not shown, perhaps being away and expected to be counted in a different household. Friedrich and Henrietta are shown in Schleswig Twp. in the 1880 census, with only Robert and Albert remaining in their household, the others having started their own farms.
Henrietta and Frederich together |
Above is a photo of the couple together, a stern Lutheran farm family. Friedrich PAGEL died on 16 April 1899 at his home in Schleswig, Calumet Co., WI. The 1900 census [the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire] therefore shows Henrietta as widowed, living with son Albert [then single] in Schleswig Twp., Manitowoc Co.. Still alive in 1910 - at age 87 - she remained in the Albert Pagel household, Albert having both married and moved to Sheboygan Co., WI. Henriette PAGEL died 28 Mar 1911 in Valders, Manitowoc Co., WI.
Friedrich PAGEL and Henriette (VIELBRAND) PAGEL are buried in Manitowoc County's Rockville Cemetery (also known as the Schleswig Cemetery). The Manitowoc Co. genealogy website contains a webpage listing all burials in the Rockville Cemetery HERE, including theirs. There are also links to photos of Friedrich's memorial Here and Here, and of Henriette's memorial Here and Here.
